Matt Small

Matthew Small’s work has strong urban roots. By painting directly onto found pieces of metal, he brings physical elements of the city directly into his work. The people he paints are also found, filmed anonymously on the streets of London. In this way, Matthew focuses on creating portrait painting at its best, when the identity of the sitter is of lesser importance than the power and insight of the piece.

Matt Small

By painting directly onto used pieces of metal he gives his work a raw, urban immediacy. The subjects of his art are also found, filmed without their knowledge (in a way we’re choosing not to find a little creepy) in and around London, enabling Matt to bypass the posed, staginess of a lot of portraiture.  Check his stunning website here.

Executed with astonishingly textured brushstrokes, Matt produces works with a thick visceral painterly quality that feel both abstract and incredibly real and vital.
