Interview with Studio Brave

by Thursday, November 8, 2012

Hello Tim,  (Tim Sutherland, Creative Director of Studio Brave)

who’s the first designer that comes to your mind in a second?

Neville Brody – He was pioneering things out of the UK when I was in college.

When you were 13, what did you want to be?

A fire chief

What’s the place or what do you do when you feel you’re thinking in a bright way?

I usually do my best thinking when I am away from my computer. Finding an inspiring place is vital for creativity.

How has your work evolved over the years from when you where beginning?

It has definitely matured. Its a lot more sophisticated now. Simpler. Purer. More confident. More restrained. More inspiring. More influential.

What do you have in common with a teenager?

Being Brave (our ethos) Passion. Energy. Excitement. Positivity. Untarnished enthusiasm. Optimism for what lies ahead. But still mistakes are made. If you are not making mistakes, you are not challenging yourself or trying new things. Its important to put yourself out of your comfort zone.

Your idea about social networks.

Certain channels can be appropriate. There seems to be a saturation of them which can be problematic.

Something you want the world to know about you.

The best is yet to come.

How many hours do you work in a day?

8-9. We try to have a good work – life balance.

Tell me a sentence that you have read recently on a wall.

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we do.

What’s overrated/underrated today?

Australian design is underrated. But things are changing.

What upcoming shows, exhibitions do you have coming up?

Our fourth studio publication has just won the first prize in the Fedrigoni Top Applications Award in Italy (in the first year that the awards have been opened to international entrants). We were honoured to have been invited to Milan in March 2012 to accept the award.
