Interview with Roman Klonek
I do woodcut printings in a straight continuity and in between illustration jobs. A new challenge will come up in a little while when I m going to start teaching Illustration in an “University of applied Sciences”. Right now I work out some concepts for this.
Tell us a little bit about yourself: where is home, and how long have you been an illustrator?
I spend the first 4 years of my life in Kattowitz/Poland. Then my family moved to Hannover in Germany. In the 90s I studied graphic arts in Dusseldorf and somehow… I´m still living here. I’m a professional Illustrator since 12 years now and I share a studio (called “Dadaluxe”) with some friends.
Would you give a brief walk through your work flow?
Usually there are 3 steps: At first the Intuitive, that means: wild scribbling – less thinking. Than the reflection, that means the composition on the computer. And at last, the execution, which means the graving and printing.
In my early days of drawing, before my study but also during my study, the act of drawing was always something like an exercise in concentration. For me it was important to observe a thing with great attention and I was very glad for catching the right form, succeeding similarity, or finding the right perspective, or putting the shadows on their right places. etc… In the meantime I have another view on this. My way of drawing has changed a little. Now its rather a play, a free association without any special target, rather experimental.
Who’s the first illustrator that comes to your mind in a second?
What’s the place or what do you do when you feel you’re thinking in a bright way?
Well in a hammock on a sunny day in a shady place… and than do nothing… perfect!
I like Heavy Metal!
Something you’ve always wanted to do, but have yet to.
Being a drummer in a band.
Something you want the world to know about you.
Well I do woodcut printings. Have a look! Tell a friend!
Something that annoys or frustrates you about people.
Bad temper without a real good reason.
Actually a good idea but too many and too private informations. I think the imminent danger to miss something is not toooo big.
A word that you hate.
What upcoming shows, exhibitions, do you have coming up?
I’ll have an exhibition next week in Cologne called “Dawai Robotnik!” and I will show,of course, new woodcut printings.
Ojojoj I’m far away from a wish like this… I think I would just waste my time.. or do 23 hours and 45 minutes absolute nonsense ans try to correct it in the last 15 minutes.
Your house is on fire, what do you save?
Well… I really don’t know. I haven’t got very precious things..
What’s overrated today?
